The Instacart guide to round radish

About round radish

When we think of a round radish, the little red orbs that we see in the supermarket come to mind. However, there are several varieties of round radishes. From ones that have snow-white skins to dark black ones, you can have a rainbow of colors when you choose round radishes.

Radishes come in three distinct shapes: round, oblong, or cylindrical. All radishes, including the round radish, belong to the Brassicaceae family along with cabbage, broccoli, mustard, and kale. Round radishes are generally 1 to 3 inches in diameter, with leafy greens on the top and hair-like roots on the bottom of the orb. All parts of the radish are edible, including the leafy greens.

Most radishes have white, firm flesh, although some varieties come with red or green flesh. All radishes have a distinct flavor profile. When you bite into a round radish, you notice a spicy, peppery flavor similar to mustard. The younger the round radish is harvested and the cooler the temperature is during their growing period, the sweeter and milder they'll be. If the radishes are left too long in the ground or grown under hot, dry conditions, they'll be overly spicy and have a pithy texture.

Common round radishes include:
  • Sparkler.
  • Cherry Belle.
  • White Beauty.
  • Early Scarlet Gold.
  • Easter Egg.
  • Watermelon.
  • Black Spanish.
  • Scarlet Globe.
  • White Globe Hailstone.
  • Chinese Red Meat.
  • Crimson Giant.
  • Pink Beauty.
  • Purple Plum.
  • Saxa 2.
The round radish has been cultivated and savored throughout Europe since its first notation in the 1500s. Today, round radishes are treasured around the world. Chefs in Mexico garnish most dishes with slices of round radish, and in France, it's quite popular to eat sliced radish with salt and butter in a sandwich.
