FAQs About Housewares

You should keep batteries in a cool place. Alkaline batteries, which are some of the most common batteries, should be stored at normal room temperature, or around 70 degrees F°. They also last the longest when kept at around 50% humidity.

Place batteries in their own container. You shouldn't keep batteries in your purse or pocket, because they can short circuit or even leak when they rub up against other metal objects, such as keys and loose change.

Batteries contain heavy metals and acids, so they can potentially damage the environment if they're not disposed of in the right way. Modern alkaline batteries are made of relatively safe materials, so you can simply throw them in the trash in most areas. However, some states and municipalities still regard alkaline batteries as hazardous waste. In these areas, you must take used batteries to a drop-off center. Local recycling centers, community centers, and electronics stores are some of the places that collect used batteries. You should find the rules for your area and a list of nearby drop-off locations on your local government website.

Rechargeable batteries contain nickel and cadmium. These chemicals can leech into the environment or even explode if they're not handled correctly, so take all your rechargeable batteries to a hazardous waste collection point, recycling center, or selected electronics retailers once they don't hold their charge.

Most modern lint rollers are reusable. However, they will lose their stickiness if they aren't cleaned regularly. With proper cleaning, a reusable lint roller can last for many years.

To clean your lint roller, soak a kitchen cloth in warm water. Wring excess water out of the cloth, so it's damp, but not dripping wet. Gently move your damp cloth in a dabbing motion over your lint roller to remove the large pieces of lint.

Tear off around 3in of masking tape and loop its ends together, so the sticky side shows out. Place your fingers inside the tape loop and use it to dab your lint roller gently. This motion should remove the smaller particles of lint. It should also reinforce the roller's sticky surface. You may need to make a few tape loops to remove all the small lint particles. Keep going until your roller is clean.

It is legal to buy a lighter at any age in every American state but Pennsylvania. In Pennsylvania, you must be at least 18 years old to purchase any butane product, including a lighter. While purchasing a lighter is legal in other states, many stores have policies that ban the sale of lighters to minors. Because of these policies, you may need to show valid identification on delivery when purchasing lighters from Instacart.

While clothespins are designed for hanging laundry outside, you can also use them for several other things, including:
  • Improving your child's finger and hand strength and fine motor skills.
  • Helping children practice counting and simple math problems.
  • Clipping up sheets when making children's forts.
  • Clipping up a string of gift cards around the holidays or birthdays.
  • Organizing papers by clipping similar documents together.
  • Holding nails while hammering.
  • Holding matches while lighting candles.
  • Converting ordinary wire hangers into skirt and pants hangers.
  • Organizing and labeling cords and cables.
  • Holding down pages in cookbooks.
  • Standing in for food clips when you've run out.
  • Various craft projects.
