3. Check out with EBT SNAP

At checkout, make sure EBT SNAP is selected as a payment method. You’ll be able to select the amount paid by EBT SNAP.

Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) is an electronic system that allows a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participant to pay for food using SNAP benefits. An EBT card works similar to a debit card, but funds come from these government-provided nutrition benefits—rather than your bank account.

Yes, EBT SNAP-eligible Instacart customers in the U.S. can pay for online grocery orders containing eligible items with a valid EBT card, in full or in part, from participating stores in select states. You can shop at any participating stores as long as the state that issued your EBT card is participating in the

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) refers to a federal program that provides nutrition benefits to low-income individuals and families. Instacart accepts SNAP benefits via EBT cards at select stores in many states.

EBT SNAP-eligible Instacart customers in the U.S. can pay for online grocery orders with a valid EBT card, in full or in part, from the following stores in select states:
  • ALDI
  • Food Lion
  • Save Mart
  • FoodMaxx
  • Lucky Supermarkets
  • Price Chopper
  • Market 32
  • Market Bistro

Instacart is part of a pilot run by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to accept EBT benefits online. Currently, customers with a valid EBT SNAP card in all states except Alaska, Louisiana and Montana can use their SNAP funds on Instacart at participating retailers. If you don’t see EBT SNAP as an option at your local store, make sure you have the latest version of the Instacart app. If you still don’t see EBT SNAP, check back later as we work to expand participation to more stores.

To use your EBT card, add it as a payment method within your account settings. A separate credit or debit card must also be linked to your Instacart account to cover fees, bottle deposits, taxes, delivery tips, and any other non-EBT SNAP-eligible items, per government regulation.

EBT SNAP funds can only be used for eligible staple food items on Instacart. SNAP item eligibility is set by the government and follows the same guidelines as purchases made with EBT SNAP cards in-store.

There are a few ways for you to see which items are EBT SNAP eligible on Instacart:

1) You can allow EBT SNAP-eligible items to display when you shop in-app. To enable this setting—
  • Click or tap Account
  • Select your Account Settings
  • Select SNAP EBT info
  • Tap the slider to turn on Show EBT eligibility by item
2) When searching for items in-app you can add a filter by tapping Explore > EBT Eligibility and selecting Only EBT-eligible items to see only EBT-eligible items. If you are browsing items from a Store's homepage, tap or click on a specific item to see if it is EBT SNAP eligible. If it is eligible, it will say EBT above the price of the item.

3) You can confirm which items are EBT SNAP eligible in your cart before checking out. It will say EBT under the name of each item that qualifies.

Yes, you can buy non-SNAP-eligible items with other forms of payment. You can also buy EBT SNAP-eligible items with your debit or credit card. Simply add an additional payment method, such as a gift card, credit card or debit card, at checkout.

Yes, you can use multiple forms of payment, such as a EBT SNAP card and a personal credit card, when you check out. Please note that only one EBT SNAP card can be used per order.
All delivery and service fees, bottle deposit fees, taxes, tips, and any items that are not EBT SNAP-eligible will be charged to the credit or debit card linked with your account.

Currently, Instacart does not accept paper coupons, such as the coupons you may find in newspapers or mail. However, Instacart regularly offers coupons and promotions available for all customers on Instacart, including customers using EBT SNAP.

Instacart has received approval from the U.S. government to accept EBT SNAP as a payment method on EBT SNAP-eligible items in select states. Currently, customers with a valid EBT SNAP card in all states except Alaska, Louisiana and Montana can use their SNAP funds on Instacart, per government regulation.

Following further government approval, Instacart hopes to expand the number of states and stores accepting online EBT SNAP payments.

Offer valid until September 16, 2021 at 11:59PM PT on your first three orders of $35 or more containing at least one EBT SNAP eligible item, and purchased at participating retailers using a valid EBT card through Instacart, while supplies last. Orders containing alcohol that qualify for a free delivery promotion will be charged a $0.01 Alcohol Delivery Fee per delivery. Deliveries subject to availability. EBT SNAP is available at select retailers. Service fees, special handling fees, other fees, and/or taxes may still apply. To take advantage of this offer, customers must have a valid account on with a valid EBT card on file. EBT cards may only be used to purchase EBT-eligible items. A credit or debit card must also be linked to the Instacart account to cover fees, bottle deposits (in some locations), taxes, delivery fees and any non-EBT eligible items, if any. Instacart reserves the right to modify or cancel this offer at any time. Only one offer per household. Offer may not be sold, copied, modified, transferred or used retroactively for prior purchases.
