The Instacart guide to navel orange products

About navel oranges

Navel oranges are sweet, seedless oranges with a distinct appearance that sets them apart from other oranges. They have a navel, or belly-button-like mark on one end, caused by an undeveloped second twin fruit that's found on the blossom. The two were connected when the fruit first bloomed, but only one develops into the fully grown orange.

Navel oranges come from the winter citrus family and are widely available during the Christmas holidays. Their season starts in November and ends in June. Most commercial naval oranges are grown in California, Arizona, Brazil, and Florida. They are a large orange growing to three inches across on average, but some can get up to 4.5 inches.

Naval oranges peel very easily and have a spongy texture. The juicy fruit is tender, seedless, and has a sweet aromatic flavor. They have plenty of juice but are not as drippy as some other oranges, with firm sections that are easy to handle. Like other citrus fruits, these oranges are loaded with healthy nutrients, including vitamin C, potassium, calcium, and dietary fiber.

FAQs About Navel Oranges

Navel oranges are the winter orange, and Valencia oranges are the summer variety. Both have a similar appearance, although Valencias don't have the navel on one end. Valencias have a lot of juice, have a few seeds, and the flavor is more tart than navel oranges. Navels don't have as much of a tang as Valencia.

In order to eat your navel orange, you need to get rid of the peel. The best way to do this is to use a serrated knife to trim the top and bottom. You can then use the knife to score the peel vertically from top to bottom to create your sections. Make sure you don't cut into the fruit. Remove each section of peel and then split the orange into the segments.

If you bring your orange on the go and don't have access to a knife, roll the orange firmly on a flat surface to loosen the skin. Puncture the skin with your thumbnail to get a hold of it, and then peel.
