The Instacart guide to single malt products

About single malt

Single malt whiskey is malt whiskey created from a single distillery using a single malted grain, usually barley. Technically, this type of whiskey is a blend of several whiskeys produced at the same distillery. The term "single" is perhaps the most confusing aspect of single malt whiskey, as it doesn't signal the whiskey came from one barrel or even one batch. In fact, most single malt whiskey is made of several blends of various barrel-aged whiskeys.

The way distilleries can blend the whiskeys is the key to single malt whiskey. They produce a consistent flavor every year. For instance, a bottle of single malt whiskey from this year should taste the same as it did 10 years ago. Also, single malt whiskeys are bottled at 40% alcohol by volume (ABV) or 80 proof or higher. Most bottles fall under 100 proof, but you might find a bottle or two that tip the 130 proof mark. They cannot be more than 160 proof.

FAQs About Single Malt

If you have an unopened bottle of single malt, you should store it in a cool and dry place that's out of the sunlight. Placing it in direct sunlight can cause the color to lighten. Fluctuating temperatures can cause the liquid in the bottle to expand, eventually damaging the bottle and cork.

Keep the bottle upright, so the alcohol doesn't degrade the cork. Unopened bottles can last indefinitely, so you don't need to worry about the alcohol going bad, but the cork might begin to disintegrate after a while. However, you should also care about the cork and keep it moist. About once or twice a year, tilt the bottle horizontally, so liquid soaks the cork to keep it fresh. Make sure to put the bottle back in the upright position, though.

Unlike wine, single malt whiskey doesn't age in its bottle. For instance, a 15-year-old bottle will remain one, even 50 years from now. Opened bottles of single malt are best consumed with two months, if possible. This isn't a hard and fast rule, but it's recommended because oxidation begins the minute you open the bottle. The flavor compounds begin to change, and you might notice the whiskey doesn't taste the same.
