About Skylar Rae cherries

The Skylar Rae cherry was first discovered in 2004 by the Toftness family on their Tip Top Orchards farm in Wenatchee, Washington. Rarely can you find a wild cherry that can be grown commercially, yet this cherry beat the odds. While the parents of this cherry are unknown, the genetic composition is unique and doesn't resemble the Ranier cherry or other sweet varieties.

Family members gave the name Skylar Rae to this new cherry in honor of Skylar Rae Toftness, the late daughter of Troy and Kim Toftness. The story goes that Skylar Rae's grandfather Jack was walking the orchard with a heavy heart over her recent loss. He spied a rainbow that led him to a tree that didn't look like the others. Instead of uprooting it, he let it grow. The following year, the tree bore fruit unlike the others, and the Skylar Rae cherry was born.

The Skyler Rae cherry has an orange-red skin and a firmness that usually doesn't indicate sweetness. Yet this cherry has a higher sugar content than most cherries that results in a juicy candy-like sweetness. While it looks very much like the Ranier cherry, it has a thicker skin that doesn't bruise as easily as the Ranier cherry.

Skylar Rae cherries have more sugar than other cherries, making them a great snack by themselves. You can mix them in yogurt for a healthy snack or breakfast. Incorporating them into your favorite ice cream recipe offers a delicious way to enjoy them. You can bake Skylar Rae cherries into your favorite brownie or muffin recipe, too. They bake well in pies and pair well with cheesecake, either piled on top or made into a warm sauce and drizzled on top.

Skylar Rae cherries make a great addition to your fruit salad too. Making a compote from Skylar Rae cherries will give you an excellent topping for waffles, pancakes, or a delicious filling for canapes. You can add them to your favorite smoothie as well.

FAQs About Skylar Rae Cherries

Freezing cherries can be time-consuming if you choose to pit them first. If you have a cherry pitter, use it. The benefits of pitting the cherry before freezing allow you to use the cherry right out of the freezer. You want to remove the stems and wash them. After pitting the cherries, lay them on a cookie sheet or tray in a single layer and put the tray in the freezer. In a few hours, they should be frozen enough to transfer to a bag. Date the bag and return it to the freezer.

Freezing the cherries on the tray before bagging helps keep them from freezing together. In this manner, you can remove only the amount of cherries you want to use from the bag and return the rest to the freezer for later use.

No. Besides being hard and bitter, cherry pits contain cyanogenic acids that are harmful to humans and pets. Eating one or two pits won't cause you any actual harm, as the levels aren't high enough. Eating a bagful of cherries with the pit could make you sick.
