In 1901 William Fisch and Herman Malchow started producing breads as Highland Bakery in Birmingham, Alabama. The single retail bakeshop had one horse-and-wagon route. An award known as the MERIT-A award was presented to bakery products with the highest merit. Highland Bakery consistently won the award and displayed the symbol “MERIT-A” on the packages. By mistake, a printer left out the hyphen, and thus, the name MERITA was born.

- Pick up orders have no service fees, regardless of non-Instacart+ or Instacart+ membership.
