Tips for using your Nexcare™ rapid digital thermometer.

Your Nexcare™ rapid digital thermometer is a durable and precise medical device. Here are some helpful hints to help you get the best performance from the product.

1. In oral use, as with all thermometers, keep thermometer in place without shifting it in the mouth while taking temperature.

2. Stay with your child during temperature taking to help ensure proper use of the thermometer.

Avoid bending the probe more than 45 degrees to prevent possible damage. This thermometer is not a toy!

Instructions for use:

1. Press button to turn on the thermometer.

A short beep signal will sound and the display will read as follows:

This is the LCD display test showing that all elements in the display are working properly.

2. Observe thermometer is ready for use.

After approximately 1 second, the display will show the "ok" symbol.

It indicates correct operation of all the thermometer parts.

If a malfunction occurs, the "Err" or "---" symbol will appear.

The "Lo" symbol with a flashing "degrees F" or "degrees C" will then appear to indicate that the thermometer is ready to take a temperature.

3. Take temperature by oral, underarm (axillary) or rectal method.

Do not eat or drink 15 minutes before taking temperature.

Oral method: place thermometer probe under tongue. Probe tip should rest in "correct area" as shown in diagram. Hold the thermometer in the same spot under your tongue with your mouth closed.

Incorrect areas can register as much as 1.2 degrees F (0.6 degrees C) lower than correct areas.

Underarm (axillary) method: (alternative method for babies or very young children. Although simpler, the axillary method is less accurate and takes longer.)

Make sure the underarm is dry and there is no material between the chest and arm. Point the thermometer upward and place the tip well into the patient's underarm. Fold patent's arm over chest to hold the thermometer in place and keep air away from the underarm.

Many people find hugging the child while taking the temperature helps ensure it is taken correctly and also comforts the child.

Rectal method: (recommended for babies or very young children who breathe through their mouth.)

Lubricate the tip of the thermometer with a water soluble jelly. Do not use petroleum jelly. The patient should lie on his/her side, knees slightly bent. If the patient is a baby, place the infant on its stomach with legs hanging down, either across your knees or at the edge of a bed or changing table. This positions the baby's rectum properly for safe and easy insertion of the thermometer.

With one hand, gently slide the tip of the thermometer no more than 1/2 inch into the rectum. If you detect resistance of any kind, stop. Hold the thermometer in place during temperature measurement. Once used rectally, the thermometer should not be used orally, for sanitary reasons.

4. Listen for completion of test.

At the completion of the measurement the "degrees C" or "degrees F" will stop flashing and you will hear a series of "completion beeps".

5. Read thermometer and record result.

A series of beeps signals completion. Remove the thermometer and read temperature on display; temperature reading will not change while the power remains on. Hold button down to see temperature reading, with backlight illuminated. It is advisable to inform your doctor any time a temperature is above 100 degrees F (37.8 degrees C).

If the temperature measured is below or above the measuring range, the thermometer will display either the "Lo" or the "HI" symbol. The measuring range for this thermometer is 90.0 degrees F to 111.9 degrees F and 32.0 degrees C to 43.9 degrees C.

6. Press button to turn off thermometer.

Press button to turn off the thermometer. If you forget it will turn off automatically after about 9 minutes.

7. Observe last temperature reading (memory feature).

To recall last recorded temperature, with the unit off, press and continue to hold the button down.

After approximately 2 seconds the recalled temperature will appear along with the "M" and the "°F" (or "degrees C") symbols.

Release the button and the recalled temperature will be replaced by the "ok" symbol, followed by the "Lo" and blinking "degrees F" (or "degrees C") symbols indicating that the thermometer is ready for a new measurement.

8. How to switch between degrees f and degrees c.

With the unit off press the button 2 times, one right after the other. The second time hold the button down for at least 2 seconds. The symbol for the new selected mode (degrees F or degrees C) will appear on the display for a few seconds. The thermometer will then be ready for a new measurement.

9. Automatic night light display.

The night light is activated automatically every time the button is pressed and will turn off when the thermometer is ready for the next measurement. This will allow for operation in low ambient light conditions when the thermometer is turned on for use, when switching between "degrees F" and "degrees C" or when recalling the last measured temperature.

10. Cleaning instructions.

Wash the area extending about 2 inches from the tip of the thermometer with warm (not hot) soapy water before and after each use; be sure to dry thermometer thoroughly.

Or.

Wipe the area described above with 70% isopropyl alcohol before and after each use. Even if you use a Nexcare™ digital thermometer probe cover, follow either of the above two cleaning procedures as an extra precaution.

To make temperature taking more sanitary, use a Nexcare™ digital thermometer probe cover every time a temperature is taken.

11. Battery instructions.

How long will the battery last? How do I know when it needs replacement?

How do I replace it? The battery will last for approximately 2000 measurements. When the battery needs to be replaced, the display will show the following sign:

Replace battery with a silver oxide type GP392 or equivalent.

Battery replacement: turn the thermometer over with the side opposite the display facing the user.

1. Push the battery cap down and pull away from the thermometer body.

2. With a non-metal pointed tool, remove the battery.

3. Insert the new battery. The positive (+) side will be facing the display side of the unit.

4. Place battery cap back into place. Make sure that the cap fits snugly.

When changing battery: do not pull out the battery holder to prevent damage to the sensor.

What is an average "normal" temperature? Normal body temperature varies from person to person, even hour to hour and by method of measurement. The normal average healthy oral temperature is 98.6 degrees F (37.0 degrees C). However, normal temperature can vary up or down by 1 degrees or 2 degrees F (0.5 or 1.0 degrees C). Hot baths, exercising, smoking and warm weather can cause body temperature to vary a degree or more. Daily oral temperature ranges go from a low of 97.0 degrees F (36.1 degrees C) between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. to a high of 99.0 degrees F (37.2 degrees C) between the hours of 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. In the chart below, you will find a list of average "normal" temperatures, and the approximate time it will take to obtain an accurate reading.

Method - average time - average normal temperature.

Oral - 16 seconds - 98.6 degrees F (37.0 degrees C).

Rectal - 10 seconds - 99.6 degrees F (37.5 degrees C).

Underarm (Axillary) - 25 seconds - 97.6 degrees F (36.4 degrees C).

What does my child's temperature reading mean?

An "average" normal temperature can fall anywhere in the range of 97 degrees F (36.1 degrees C) - 100 degrees F (37.8 degrees C).

It is advisable to inform your doctor anytime a temperature is over 100 degrees F (37.8 degrees C). Generally, the higher the temperature, the more serious it is.

Temperatures of 105 degrees F (40.6 degrees C) and above could be dangerously high. Get medical attention immediately.
