Planting Tips. For best results follow planting instructions. Plant 4" deep and 6" apart in rows, keep 12" between rows. Another culinary favorite, just a pound of garlic cloves can produce 7-10 pounds of garlic. When to Plant ( fall purchase ): If you purchased this package in the fall, plant as soon as possible allowing the garlic to start a root system prior to the first frosts of winter. If any green sprouts are visible above the ground, mulch heavily for winter protection. When to Plant ( spring purchase ): If you purchased this package in the spring, plant as soon as possible in early spring once the soil is workable. This usually is 2-4 weeks after your last frost date. Where to Plant: Garlic prefers to grow in cooler temperatures. Choose a sunny spot with rich well drained garden soil. For areas with heavy soils, amend with sand and organic matter for best results prior to planting. Garlic prefers a soil pH of 6.2-6.8 in a slightly dry area of the garden. How to Plant: Separate cloves from garlic bulb and plant pointed end up in a 4" deep hole. Space the cloves 6" apart in row, with 12" between rows. Time to Harvest: When the leaves turn brown it is time to harvest. Carefully lift mature garlic bulbs out of the ground and allow to dry in the sun for several days. This gives the outer skin a chance to cure. Usage: Fresh or cooked this is a versatile healthy flavorful vegetable. Good keeper for use throughout the winter. Can also be chopped and frozen for later use. Helpful Tips: Pinch off any flowers that might develop as although they look nice they consume energy that should be going into the finished bulb size. After Care: Store garlic bulbs by roping or hanging in netted bags in a cool, frost free dry spot for use throughout the winter.
