A. Position assist vehicle for convenient hook-up. Do not let vehicles touch. B. Place automatic transmissions in park, manual transmissions in neutral. Set hand brake and shut off ignition and all accessory switches. C. Be certain that both vehicles have the same voltage rating. To boost a battery properly, follow this procedure. 1. Wear safety glasses. 2. Connect one of the red-handled clamps to the positive (+) post of the good battery. 3. Connect the other red-handled clamp to the positive (+) post of the dead battery. 4. Connect one of the black-handled clamps to the negative (-) post of the good battery. 5. Connect the other black-handled clamp to the frame bumper or engine block of the car with the dead battery. Make this connection as far away from the dead battery as possible. Do not lean over the battery while making the connection. Take extra the clamps on one side of the cables do not accidentally touch the clamps on the other cable. 6. After the engine of the car with the dead battery is running, disconnect the booster cable clamps in reverse order.
Note: This method is for use with negative ground batteries only. For cars with positive ground batteries, see owner's manual. Do not attempt to boost a frozen battery! Warning: Lead/acid batteries can generate explosive gases.
