The Instacart guide to crimini mushrooms

About crimini mushrooms

While there are thousands of mushroom varieties, many of them are inedible or dangerously poisonous. Mushrooms in the Agaricus Bisporus, including crimini mushrooms, are edible and have been cultivated in the United States since the 1800s. Around the world, crimini mushrooms have been a source of food, medicine, and in some cultures, revered as a food of the gods.

You'll often notice a bin or package of interesting brown mushrooms located next to creamy white mushrooms at the store or farmers market. These are crimini mushrooms and are closely related to white and portobello mushrooms. You sometimes see them marked as baby bellas, brown, or cremini mushrooms.

Criminis are round on the top of short and stubby with stems. They range in color from light brown to dark brown and have a sweet earthy, nutty taste. The texture of crimini mushrooms is similar to white mushrooms, but they tend to be a bit firmer and hold up well to cooking. Crimini mushrooms can be eaten raw in salads or cooked in a variety of ways. You can add them to sauces, stir-fries, or make a hearty soup with them.

Crimini mushrooms are fungi and grow all around the world in rich, moist soil. Crimini mushrooms belong in the Agaricus Bisporus family along with white and portobello mushrooms. The difference between these three mushrooms is the age that they are harvested. White button mushrooms are picked young, criminis are next, and they become portabella mushrooms when left to fully mature.

Because of their firm texture, moderate water content, and earthy flavor, chefs prefer cooking with crimini mushrooms. They retain most of their size when cooked, and they look striking when added to a salad with sliced red onions and vibrant green arugula.
