The Instacart guide to reishi mushrooms

About reishi mushrooms

Reishi mushrooms are native to Europe, Asia, and North America, and have been held as sacred by the Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and other Asian countries for thousands of years. Known in the Chinese language as Ling Zhi and also referred to as the mushroom of immortality, this fungus has been found in many historical Chinese artworks and used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries due to its health-promoting effects.

These mushrooms can be found in a wide range of global climates, but they prefer tropical, sub-tropical, and temperate regions where hardwood deciduous trees grow. They are not easily discovered, but you will most likely find them on oak and maple trees when they are.

Known for their antioxidant properties, reishi mushrooms may enhance the human immune response. Studies suggest that complex sugars, known as beta-glucans, found in reishi mushrooms help stop the growth and spread of cancer cells. In these studies, animals who were fed beta-glucans were found to have a more active immune system.

While there are very few studies that support the use of reishi mushrooms to combat disease, some clinical studies have shown them to increase the immune response in humans. These studies also suggest that reishi mushrooms may help lower blood pressure and reduce the effects of allergies.

Clinical studies of the reishi mushroom have been shown to reduce urinary tract infections, provide mild anti-diabetic effects, and improve abnormal levels of cholesterol and other fats. Preclinical studies suggest that reishi mushrooms can help regulate the immune system with their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Reishi mushrooms have been studied for their anti-cancer benefits. These studies have shown that reishi mushrooms can enhance the effectiveness of radiation, help reduce any nausea associated with chemotherapy, and enhance immune and tumor response in cancer patients.

Other health benefits of reishi mushrooms may include:
  • Reducing fatigue.
  • Decreasing high cholesterol.
  • Helping in the treatment of AIDS.
  • Lowering blood pressure.
  • Stimulating the immune system.
  • Reducing inflammation.
  • Increasing strength and stamina.
  • Helping to treat viral infections.
  • Lowering urinary tract infection symptoms.
While there are several proven and alleged positive health benefits of reishi mushrooms, some risks are associated with the fungus. It has been known to cause toxicity in some immune cells and was discovered to be potentially harmful to the liver. Anyone who wishes to use this fungus in the treatment of their own physical health should always seek the advice of their personal care provider first.

FAQs About Reishi Mushrooms

Follow the steps below for drying your reishi mushrooms in the oven. You can also use a dehydrator. Be sure to check on the mushrooms regularly until they are at your preferred consistency.
  • Clean the mushrooms with a brush or a slightly damp paper towel.
  • Slice them thin as this will allow them to dry more quickly.
  • Arrange them on baking sheets in a single layer.
  • Place them in an oven at 150 F.
  • After one hour, turn the mushrooms over. If any wet spots have sweated out of the mushrooms, lightly blot them with a paper towel.
  • Cook them another hour.
  • The mushrooms should be dried, but if not, no worries. Simply repeat steps four through six until they are dried.

Once you've dried your reishi mushrooms, you can then crush them up into a powder and add them to boiling water. Simmer the mushroom/water mixture for at least two hours. Some people repeat this process to make the liquid more concentrated. You can also use the powder to make reishi mushroom tea.
