The Instacart guide to peaches

About peaches

Peaches are a sweet, fuzzy stone fruit. They are native to China. While China produces 45% of the world's peach crops, there are several places in the United States where peaches can grow as well, making them easy to find through Instacart! Georgia is known as "The Peach State," but, surprisingly, it ranks fourth among the top peach producers in the country. California produces the most peaches in the United States, followed by South Carolina and New Jersey.

Peaches come in two main varieties:
  • Freestone Peaches: The flesh of a freestone peach separates easily from the pit, making it an ideal choice for snacking.
  • Clingstone Peaches: The pit of a clingstone peach clings to the flesh, making it more difficult to remove.
One medium-sized peach offers two grams of fiber, 17% of your daily recommended vitamin C, and 10% of your daily recommended Vitamin A. Peaches also contain potassium, iron, magnesium, and phosphorus. They're high in antioxidants that can help protect your body from disease and the effects of aging.

FAQs About Peaches

After picking, a whole peach will typically last for three to four days on the counter and up to five days in the refrigerator. Once sliced, peaches will retain their freshness for just two to four hours on the counter. You can refrigerate sliced peaches for up to three days, but they will taste best when eaten just after cutting. Frozen peaches will last for up to a year in the freezer. These are a great choice for smoothies!

Keep peaches on the counter until they're ripe. Once your peaches have ripened, you can store them in the refrigerator to keep them in this state as long as possible.

If you'd like to preserve your peaches longer, you can freeze them. While you can freeze whole peaches, this means that you'll have to wait for the entire fruit to thaw before you can use it. If you'd like to toss your frozen peaches in a smoothie, or want to thaw them more quickly, it's better to wash and slice the peaches first.

Once you've cut the peaches, soak them in a bath with about four cups of water and two tablespoons of lemon juice to prevent browning. Drain the peaches and lay them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to freeze. Once the peaches are frozen through, you can transfer them to a freezer bag.
